As an Interdisciplinary Body of the International Science Council (ISC), the mission of the World Data System is to support the ISC’s vision by promoting long-term stewardship of, and universal and equitable access to, quality-assured scientific data and data services, products, and information across a range of disciplines in the natural and social sciences, and the humanities.
Along this line, the Scientific Committee of WDS promoted a series of WDS Asia-Oceania Conferences; the first one in Kyoto, 2017, and the second in Beijing, 2019. This issue includes papers describing the data activities conducted by participants of these conferences on disciplinary and interdisciplinary data systems and databases, new discoveries from data analyses, and proposal of WDS-oriented collaborations on data in the area. Construction of infrastructure for long-term preservation and provision of research data taken by scientific activities in this area has been still under development particularly in the South-East Asian countries.
Establishment of a collaborative network in the Asia-Oceania area will be important to support WDS-oriented activities being conducted in this area. We hope this special collection can be an initial landmark of our WDS-led collaboration in the Asia-Oceania area.
